Why We Ride
To
celebrate Survivorship
on National Cancer Survivor weekend by creating a
safe and well supported two-day cycling event that
promotes healing and inspiration in:
● Breast cancer survivors
●
Supporters and family members
●
Community partners
● Sponsors
● Volunteers
BECAUSE
-
Receiving a cancer diagnosis changes your life.
-
Healing from the experience of hearing the word
"cancer" is a personal, family and community
journey that springs more from INSPIRATION, than
information.
-
Cancer survivors become inspired and empowered
by programs and people that honor the strength,
courage and resiliency left in their bodies and
souls.
-
Breast cancer survivors who walk or do other
kinds of moderate exercise for 3-5 hours per
week are about 50% less likely to die from their
disease than sedentary women.
-
Regular exercise also helps:
- Reduce side effects of cancer treatments
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Nausea
- Pain
- Reduce insulin levels
- Boost the immune system
- Improve self confidence and body image
- Improve Quality of Life
- Cancer patients and survivors can exercise safely with the support of health care providers and cancer exercise specialists.
- Personal and community support make it “easier” for some cancer survivors to begin and maintain a regular exercise program.
- Survivors deserve programs that offer support as they confront their fear and uncertainty while gathering strength and courage.
- Spending $1 increasing physical activity leads to a $3 reduction in health care costs.
- WE CAN
TO
- Inspire, support and empower breast cancer survivors and those who support them to participate.
- Raise awareness about the physical and emotional benefits of regular exercise for breast cancer survivors.
- Raise funds to support activity based healing programs that promote rehabilitation, renewal and recovery in
LOCAL breast cancer survivors.
100% of the proceeds will support
programs
in the Oregon and SW Washington area.
Funds raised will be used to provide
- Individual and group fitness training programs created and maintained by Cancer Exercise Specialists.
- Volunteer Exercise Buddy Program: using volunteer community members to offer practical and emotional support to breast cancer survivors to help them begin and maintain a regular exercise program:
- Moving Toward Wellness Packs:
An empowering program offering newly diagnosed breast cancer patients a pedometer, water bottle, journal, discount card and voucher for a consultation with a Cancer Exercise Specialist to help inspire and support them as they begin a regular physical activity program.
