Fundraising Tips

Your commitment to this fundraising challenge is something you should be proud of. You are taking a positive step for yourself and helping to fulfill a need for local community members coping with breast cancer.

FUNDRAISING IS AN ADVENTURE AND A CHALLENGE - HAVE FUN WITH IT !

You may find fundraising a big challenge, especially if you have never had an opportunity to do it before. You CAN have fun with it, so challenge yourself, set your goals and go for it ! Your success will depend on you.

The Key to Success.... Diversify

Don’t rely on just one “big idea” to raise all your money. The first thing you should do before you start fundraising is to make a plan involving at least two different methods of raising money. A good combo would be to do a letter campaign, go door to door, and do a special or one time-event. Choose the combo that ‘s best for you.

Attitude

A positive attitude is one of the most important things you need to be a successful fundraiser, and it’s easy to have a positive attitude when you’re doing something worthwhile for a cause you believe in.

The Cancer Community Renewal Project provides many renewing and healing programs to people coping with cancer. We do not receive funding from any government source and rely on donations to support all of our programs. We are a non-profit organization. So ask for pledges confidently. What you’re doing is important, and you’re giving others the chance to make a difference also.

Be Prepared

You never know when you’ll meet a prospective sponsor, so carry your fundraising materials with you.

When you start your fundraising don’t apologize for asking for money. You are a volunteer raising money for a worthwhile cause. You will probably get some people who will say “no”, but don’t take it personally. They are not saying no to you, only go your request. Go on to the next person.

Many people will want to know more about The Cancer Community Renewal Project and what it does. You will be a much more successful fundraiser if you know the answers to their questions. Review or print out the Why We Ride information and have it available to refer to.

Start With People You Know

Fundraising isn’t easy for everyone. For that reason, we suggest you start with the people, companies and organizations that you are familiar with. It’s nice to get a few “easy” pledges before you start on the more challenging ones.

Share Your Adventure

You can “sell” portions of the event. Make certificates or ribbons to give to people who “buy” a portion of the trip. Wear a company’s t-shirt or a shirt bearing commemorative names.

Letter Campaigns

Sending letters (See attached samples - Survivor Letter , Support Letter) to potential sponsors (especially friends and relatives that live far away) can be a very effective means of raising money. The key here is to make it easy for people to send donations. You might include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for them to mail back their donations to YOU and be sure to tell them how to make their checks out. • develop a list of potential donors

  • write a compelling letter

  • mail the letters and include the reply coupon and directions on how to return it to you

  • make follow up calls if you think folks may need a reminder

If You Want Big Money...

If you want big money, then ask the people who have it. Don’t be shy... remember, it’s a worthy cause. There are literally hundreds of people out there you can talk to. Some local clubs, such as Lions, Rotary and Businessmen’s/women’s clubs have money set aside for the specific purpose of helping non-profit organizations and other groups.

There Are a Lot of Creative Ways to Fundraise

There are endless ways to creatively fundraise. Have your spouse, partner, or family members help. The more people the better.

  • Raffles - Raffles can be a great way to raise money. Sometimes it’s easier to get a product donation from a company than it is to get cash. A raffle is one way to transfer that product into cash for your pledges.

  • Garage/Yard Sales, Bake Sales, Car Washes, etc... - These can work too. Getting help from friends will make it easier.

  • Dances, Scavenger Huts, Car Rallies, Beach or Pool Parties, etc. - these events are just a few of the ideas that you can hold to raise money for your pledges.

  • Bingo or Bunko Night - Invite friends to play and ask for donations; collect door prizes and sell raffle tickets at the same time.

JUST ASK FOR IT !

The reason most people make a donation is because someone asked them to.

Good Luck and thank you for making a difference in the lives of LOCAL friends, family members, colleagues and community members coping with cancer.
